First of all, this is going to be a little and (most important) not conclusive post, ‘cause I have other things to do, and you know, I’m kind of sick and tired of these (honestly: stupid) things.
-LITTLE COMPENDIUM
Or – ok: what happened? Briefly: Valerija Sestic, Swiss of Croatian descent, model
vogue.it
(for the record, a model I like a lot and of who I’ve already written positive things these days), lied (sic) about her age, ‘cause yep, she’s still 15, but told her agency, Women Management, she’s already 16. So the agency, Women, totally unaware of what her real age was (hehe btw these things remind me some “Old West stories”, where when a foreigner comes in town the only way to know something about him/her are other people’s tales – and most important: no IDs in Old West! As cowboys would saw, Yeehaw!!!), sent her to castings and told designers she was ok ‘cause yes, she’s 16, and in New York City if you’re 16 you can walk shows. I mean, CFDA has some granitic rules about age, and… ok, I wanted to be ironic, but the (ridiculous) mess happened last season with Hailey Clauson, Diane von Furstenberg and totally nonsense letters will explain the thing better than other 1000 words… and for the record, better underline those aren’t exactly “granitic rules”, but “guidelines” – translation: “That’s how things should be, but what the heck, you can do whatever you want!”.
Btw, that said… yes, there is this rule, pardon, “guideline”, that’s what HAPPENED (and I underline, happened, past), ignorance (‘cause it’s been about ignoring something) made that happen, and ok, end of the story.
-HERE WE GO AGAIN? PARTIALLY…
No, it’s not about the same old story, it’s not what happened with Hailey (see link above), ‘cause this is about a we DIDN’T know, IF WE HAD KNOWN, and most important about a NOW.
NOW, we are in Milan, if I’m not wrong (and I’m not, ‘cause to be sure I just checked…) rules about age haven’t changed since I wrote about them – btw here what my conclusions were (pretty topical in fact), and the link: This is another example of how much hypocrisy is stupid and irritating, and I repeat: if you have to say or do a thing just to waste time and show how much you care about a thing you actually don’t give a damn and you don’t want to have a serious initiative for: JUST SHUT THE F**K UP AND DON’T DO A DAMN THING. ‘cause if you do meaningless bullshits it’s even worse.
So, NOW?
-NOW
Now: Women in New York knows Valerija is 15, everyone there does, we’re in 2011 so we don’t have to wait the slow transatlantic crossing of the news ‘cause there are things called internet and telephone so most important Women in Milan now knows it (or should supposed to – but they’re super-professional, so I’m sure they do…), whoever is involved in shows knows “Camera nazionale della moda” rules (better “commitment”: “Noi ci impegniamo a non far sfilare modelle di età inferiore ai 16 anni, perché crediamo che siano giovani non ancora pronte al mondo del professionismo della moda, che rischiano di trasmettere messaggi sbagliati alle loro coetanee della delicata fascia pre-adolescenziale” the original words) and (I guess) is subject to them – the result?
The result is we’re in September and if I’m not wrong September isn’t October, Valerija is still 15, and SHE’S WALKING (Present Continuous) shows in Milan (where the above “NO UNDER 16 MODELS in Milan FW” is still good).
Btw, better underline it, NOW. It’s not what happened with Hailey, Diane von Furstenberg’s regrets about a past and *cough* empty *cough* promises about the future, this is about a HERE and a NOW, and it’s just like a “I’m sorry for what I did”, “If I had only known…”, “I’ll never do it again” – and a second after the naughty little kid is caught with his hand in the cookie jar. And from this point of view, Dejan Markovic’s (president of Women Management) words (“It is true. She is 15. This is never going to happen again from our company. I take full responsibility”) are mockingly ironic…
-(WHAT) FUTURE
We could talk about rules, why if it’s at the same time stupid, empty and senseless to create rules (haha and “sentries”… please check this old post, final part, human stupidity is simply hilarious sometimes…) against anorexia (‘cause yep, the thing is totally questionable and about not exactly objective things – and btw I take the opportunity to underline anorexia is about an eating disorder and not weight by itself, ‘cause people tend to confuse things…) fashion can’t even respect (btw self-phagocytized) rules (yep, “guidelines”) about such an objective and unquestionable thing like age is, we could talk about parents, agencies, about the fact the point isn’t walking this or that show but following these models who first of all are (most of the times little / very little) girls, and be concerned should mean take care and follow, sincerely and without the necessity of rules or guidelines, and… but as I started with – I have other things to do, and you know, I’m kind of sick and tired of these (honestly: stupid) things.
